LAGOS, Nigeria - December 2025 - VURIN Limited, a leading full-stream energy services company, today announced a landmark acquisition of BASF's advanced ChemCycling technology. This strategic move positions VURIN to build Africa's first-of-its-kind infrastructure for converting mixed plastic waste into a valuable resource, tackling Nigeria's plastic pollution crisis while creating significant economic opportunities.
The acquisition includes the complete framework for BASF West Africa's innovative chemical recycling process, featuring a state-of-the-art reactor system, heat exchanger, control system, and dual-fuel feed system. This technology provides a powerful platform to transform post-consumer plastic waste, which is often difficult to recycle mechanically, into pyrolysis oil. This high-quality oil can then be used as feedstock in refineries and petrochemical plants, creating a closed-loop system and advancing Nigeria's circular economy.
Nigeria currently generates an estimated 13 million tonnes of plastic waste annually, with a large portion ending up in landfills or as environmental pollutants due to contamination and complex material composition. Chemical recycling offers a sustainable solution by breaking down plastics at a molecular level, enabling the recovery of value from materials that would otherwise be discarded.
"Nigeria's plastic waste problem is not an issue of waste, but of resource allocation," said Victor Ude, Chief Executive Officer of VURIN. "This material has immense value, and with this acquisition, we are building the critical infrastructure to unlock it. We are turning an environmental and economic liability into a productive asset, creating a sustainable future for Nigeria and positioning our nation as a leader in the decarbonizing global market."
The commercialization of this project is now underway, with VURIN taking a bold step to establish an advanced recycling infrastructure that will create thousands of jobs and support Nigeria's transition to a circular economy. This initiative represents a significant investment in the nation's industrial capacity and a commitment to sustainable development.
